A Rakhi for One and All!

At the risk of sounding cliche I would say that the buzz of Raksha Bandhan led me to think how tying of Rakhi is synonymous with the bond of love and care between a brother and sister. So leaping across many thoughts of love and hate, my mind inevitably wandered towards the rampant killings, bombings, terror attacks, lynchings, rapes, murders and what not, all across the world! Yes, I sound like a maniac thinking that only this is what happens around us, when indeed life has so much more to offer.
But you see I cannot help myself.
Somehow most nights (not every night) before going to bed tucking my kids in, kissing their sleeping faces my mind inevitably drifts to images of grief stricken, dirt laden, faces of kids among the rubble called Syria and I shudder at the mere thought of those innocents. I wonder what if we were subjected to such situation, then another shudder, close my eyes, thank God a zillion times and a silent prayer goes for them who are suffering.
Closer home, I sometimes wish that all of humanity should turn into holy cows so that their lives also become valuable, and they are not treated as just another mere mortal human being.
A rape here, an abduction there, it's as if we do not even bother to as much as give a damn to these news nowadays, since they do not even form the headlines anymore. We have become so used to such incidents, as if almost being immune to them.
Like me every parent in the history of humanity would have wished the best for their kids and my optimist view says that they would also have tried to inculcate the best values among them. Then where the hell did humanity went wrong? Why are we so callous now, hell-bent on hating each other, judging each other more rather than being supportive of each other? Or, forget it - let's just learn to let go, not even support each other, which requires a much dignified version of humans which I suppose is extinct now. They don't make them like that anymore!

Can we be opportunistic enough (we are! aren't we?) to exploit this occasion and instead of tying a Rakhi on just our brothers' wrist, let's have a Rakhi for everyone this Raksha Bandhan. It is one of the most beautiful gestures celebrating sibling' love. Together let's celebrate the love for humanity, give respect to the gift of life and have a commitment towards each other's well being. A Rakhi signifies just that - love,  respect and commitment towards a beautiful human bond. My unflinching hope in humanity gives me aspirations towards initiating a trail of humane beginnings amidst all this chaos....
